Canadian Light Source Inc. (CLSI) is Canada’s national synchrotron research facility located on the University of Saskatchewan campus in Saskatoon.
CLSI is currently recruiting an Industrial Staff Scientist to provide high-quality support to our commercial users, complementing the expertise of the current scientific and technical team responsible for the development of an applied science synchrotron user-base. The CLS industrial program supports a broad range of industrial sectors including mining, oil & gas, aerospace, energy storage and biotechnology. We are looking for a candidate with demonstrated experience applying synchrotron-based techniques to work with industry.
Responsibilities: Reporting to the Director of Industrial Science, the Industrial Staff Scientist plays a key role in developing the applied science user-base at the CLS. This involves identifying potential applications of synchrotron analysis to meet client needs, based on the nature of the research and type of sample. Coordinating with the User’s Office and beamline Staff Scientists, the Industrial Staff Scientist conducts client experiments on the beamline or provides user support by training the client on basic procedures, safety protocols and setting up samples for data collection. The Industrial Staff Scientist will assign project tasks to Industrial Science Associates and provide a technical review of work completed. This position requires working cooperatively with other industrial staff to ensure seamless customer service and project efficiency. The Industrial Staff Scientist is accountable to the client for the analysis and interpretation of results and for reporting the results both verbally and in writing. Opportunities to publish research results are encouraged, as is the development of a personal research program. Working flexible hours, including evenings and weekends is a requirement of the position.
Qualifications: Applicants must possess a Ph.D. degree in a relevant discipline, and must have a proven track record of excellence in research, preferably synchrotron-based. Research areas may include integrating x-ray absorption spectroscopy techniques with other synchrotron-based techniques. Experience in facilitating collaborative teams of academic, government and industry researchers would be an asset. Candidates must be proficient in making presentations and writing technical reports in fluent English. Good organizational skills are necessary, as well as the ability to interact and communicate effectively with clients and colleagues.
Remuneration: Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, falling within the SR4 salary range of $71,288 to $106,932 per annum in the Scientific & Research Job Family as per the CLSI Out-of-Scope Salary Grid. A comprehensive benefits package, including supplemental health & dental, life insurance, pension plan, and 4 weeks annual vacation is part of a competitive compensation package.
